Best AI for images and graphic design: posters, logos, photos and social media

AI can now create images from a description, remove backgrounds, extend photos and design whole posters. For graphic designers it's a powerful assistant; for small businesses it's a quick way to get decent visuals. But good design still needs a human eye, and copyright and trademarks still matter.

How to write a good image prompt

Describe it in this order: subject, setting, style, lighting, composition, colours, format.

TEXT
A smiling Kenyan woman selling fresh mangoes at a busy market stall in Nyeri, morning sunlight,
realistic photo style, shallow depth of field, warm colours, square 1:1 format, space at the top for text.
TEXT
Flat vector illustration of a young man coding on a laptop at a desk with a plant,
blue and yellow brand colours, clean minimal style, white background.

Tips:

  • Generate several options, then refine: "Same image but the stall is green and there are bananas too."
  • Add text later in Canva, not in the AI image; AI often misspells words.
  • Say what you don't want: "no extra fingers, no text, no watermark".

A poster workflow for a business (15 minutes)

  1. Write the message first: offer, date, place, contact.
  2. Generate one or two background images (or use a real photo of the shop).
  3. Open a Canva template in the right size (Instagram post, WhatsApp status, A4 poster).
  4. Add the image, the text, the logo and the phone number.
  5. Check spelling, contrast and that the phone number is correct.
  6. Export as PNG for social media, PDF for printing.

Logos: be careful

  • AI can give ideas and directions for a logo quickly.
  • But a good logo needs to be simple, unique and work in one colour and at small sizes; AI often produces busy images.
  • AI images may look similar to existing brands. Check it doesn't copy a known logo, and consider registering your trademark with KIPI (Kenya Industrial Property Institute) if the brand matters.
  • Many professionals use AI for ideas, then redraw the final logo as clean vectors.
Think about it: A client asks for "a logo exactly like Safaricom's but with my name". What do you tell them?Show answer

Politely refuse to copy it: it would infringe Safaricom's trademark and could get the client sued or forced to rebrand. Offer an original logo instead, use AI for fresh ideas, and suggest registering the final logo with KIPI.

Summary

  • Canva for finished designs; ChatGPT, Gemini or Midjourney to generate images; Ideogram for text in images; Adobe Firefly for commercially safer images; Recraft for vectors.
  • Prompt with subject, setting, style, lighting, composition, colours and format.
  • Add text in Canva, not in the AI image.
  • Respect trademarks, people's rights and commercial-use terms.
