Using AI safely: privacy, costs, accuracy, honesty and paying from Kenya
The best AI user is not the one with the most tools. It's the one who gets good results without leaking data, wasting money, spreading errors or breaking rules. This lesson gathers the safety habits from every task in this subject.
1. Privacy: what never to paste
- Passwords, PINs, one-time codes
- National ID, passport and KRA PIN numbers of other people
- M-Pesa statements, bank details, payslips
- Medical records, student records, HR files
- Client contracts and secrets (unless your organisation approves the tool)
- API keys, database passwords and
.envfiles
Settings to check in every tool:
- Can I turn off "use my chats to train the model"?
- Can I delete my history?
- Is there a business or education version with stronger privacy?
2. Accuracy: trust, but verify
| Higher risk | What to do |
|---|---|
| Facts, numbers, dates, prices, laws | Check official sources |
| References and quotes | Find and open the original |
| Medical, legal, tax, money advice | Confirm with a qualified professional |
| Code | Run and test it |
| Translations of official documents | Have a fluent person check |
3. Costs: free first, pay for value
- Most tools have free plans with daily limits; they're enough to learn.
- Pay only for one or two tools you use daily and that save time or earn money.
- Watch for annual plans you forget about; set a reminder before renewal.
- Teams: one shared business plan may be cheaper than many personal plans (and better for privacy).
Paying from Kenya
- Most AI tools charge in US dollars by card.
- Options: a Visa/Mastercard debit card from your bank, or a virtual card linked to M-Pesa (offered by some banks and Safaricom services; check current options and fees).
- Some app-store subscriptions (Google Play) can be paid through mobile carrier billing or M-Pesa where supported.
- Watch exchange rates and card fees; cancel trials before they renew.
4. Honesty and rules
- School: follow your institution's AI rules; don't submit AI work as your own when it's not allowed.
- Work: follow company policy; say when a document is AI-assisted if required.
- Clients: be open about AI use where it matters (e.g. AI images, voice-overs).
- Never create deepfakes, fake reviews, fake documents or impersonations.
5. Scams using AI
| Scam | Protection |
|---|---|
| Cloned voice notes asking for money | Call back on a known number; family safe word |
| Fake "AI trading bots" promising profits | No bot guarantees profits; avoid |
| Fake AI apps that steal logins | Download only from official stores and websites |
| Deepfake videos of celebrities selling products | Assume it's fake; check official pages |
| "Pay us to unlock AI jobs" | Real jobs don't charge to apply |
6. Your personal AI policy (copy and keep)
1. I never paste passwords, PINs or other people's private data into AI. 2. I check facts, numbers and references before sharing. 3. I use AI to learn and draft, and I take responsibility for the final work. 4. I follow my school's and employer's AI rules. 5. I don't create deepfakes, fake reviews or misleading content. 6. I pay only for tools that clearly save me time or earn me money.
Think about it: A colleague pastes the whole customer database (names, phones, purchase history) into a free AI chat to "find our best customers". What's wrong, and what's a safer way?Show answer
It may break the Data Protection Act and company policy, and exposes customers' personal data to a third party. Safer: remove names and phone numbers (use customer IDs), use an approved business tool, or analyse it in Excel/Power BI locally, then use AI only on anonymised summaries.
Summary
- Never paste passwords, PINs or others' private data; check privacy settings.
- Verify facts, references, code and translations.
- Start free; pay for one or two tools that clearly add value; watch renewals and fees.
- Follow school and work rules; never make deepfakes or fake reviews; watch for AI scams.
