Fiverr step by step: gigs that rank, packages, first orders and seller levels

On Fiverr, you don't chase clients with proposals as much as on Upwork. Instead you create gigs (ready-made service listings, like products in a shop) and buyers find and order them. It suits productised services: logos, short videos, voice-overs, WordPress fixes, captions, CV writing, social media designs, data cleaning and many more.

How Fiverr works

TermMeaning
GigYour service listing: title, images or video, description, packages, FAQs
PackagesUp to three tiers (Basic, Standard, Premium) with different deliverables and prices
ExtrasAdd-ons: faster delivery, extra revisions, source files
OrderA buyer pays upfront; Fiverr holds the money until the order is completed
ClearanceAfter completion, earnings become available to withdraw after a waiting period
Seller levelsNew Seller → Level 1 → Level 2 → Top Rated, based on orders, ratings, on-time delivery and response rate
Search rankingFiverr decides which gigs to show buyers, using relevance, conversion, ratings and seller performance

Step 1: Choose gig ideas buyers actually search

  1. Search Fiverr for your service as a buyer would ("wordpress speed", "logo for restaurant", "captions for youtube").
  2. Look at the first page: what titles, prices, delivery times and packages do top gigs use? How many reviews do they have?
  3. Look for a specific angle you can own: "M-Pesa payment integration for WooCommerce", "Kiswahili voice-over", "subtitles in Kiswahili and English", "CBC lesson materials".
  4. Start with one or two gigs done really well rather than seven average ones.

Step 2: Write a gig that converts

Title

Fiverr titles start with "I will…". Include the main search phrase near the start, and be specific.

  • Weak: "I will do website design"
  • Better: "I will build a fast WordPress website for your restaurant with online menu and WhatsApp orders"

Images and video

The first image is your shop window. Use a clean, bright image showing the result (a mockup of a finished site on a phone, a before/after, a sample design), large readable text with 3–5 words, and no copyrighted images you don't have rights to. A short gig video (30–75 seconds, you or a screen recording) can help buyers trust you.

Packages (good, better, best)

BasicStandardPremium
Example: social media designs3 post designs7 post designs + captions15 designs + captions + content calendar
Revisions123
Delivery3 days4 days6 days

Most buyers choose the middle package when it's clearly the best value. Write exactly what's included and what isn't (stock photos, printing, content writing) to avoid disputes.

Description

Structure: the buyer's problem → what you deliver → why you (proof, relevant experience) → process (what happens after ordering) → what you need from the buyer → a friendly line inviting questions. Short paragraphs and bullet points; easy to read on a phone.

FAQs and requirements

Answer the questions buyers always ask (revisions, source files, timelines). Set requirements so buyers provide everything you need when they order (logo files, text, examples they like, login details through a secure method).

Tags and category

Choose the most accurate category and subcategory, and use tags that match real search phrases.

Step 3: Get your first orders

New gigs have no reviews, so be patient and active:

  • Respond fast to messages; response time affects ranking and buyer trust.
  • Be online at times your buyers are active; check the app regularly.
  • Start with competitive (not insulting) prices, then raise them after 5–10 good reviews.
  • Offer custom offers when a buyer messages with a specific need.
  • Briefs / buyer requests: Fiverr has offered ways for buyers to post requests that sellers can respond to; use whatever the current feature is, with tailored replies, not copy-paste.
  • Share your gig with your network and in relevant communities where self-promotion is allowed (no spam).
  • Fiverr's rules on reviews: never trade reviews, buy fake orders or ask friends to place fake orders. This gets accounts banned.

Step 4: Deliver orders like a professional

  1. When an order arrives, check the requirements immediately and ask any questions within hours.
  2. Send a short "I've started, here's the plan" message.
  3. Deliver before the deadline if you can, with a clear delivery message: what's included, how to use the files, what to do next.
  4. Handle revisions politely and within the scope of the package. If the buyer asks for something outside the package, offer an extra or a custom offer.
  5. If something goes wrong (illness, power outage, the brief changes), message the buyer before the deadline and agree an extension through the order page.

Late delivery, cancellations and low ratings hurt your level and ranking more than almost anything else.

Seller levels and ranking

Fiverr evaluates sellers regularly. In general, what moves you up:

  • Completed orders and earnings over time
  • High ratings and few cancellations
  • On-time delivery
  • Fast response rate

Check the current level requirements in your seller dashboard. Focus on fundamentals; they compound.

Rules that get Fiverr accounts closed

  • Asking for or sharing contact details or payments outside Fiverr before an order (follow Fiverr's current communication rules)
  • Fake reviews, self-orders, review swaps
  • Multiple accounts, or using someone else's account
  • Copying other sellers' images or portfolios
  • Delivering work you don't have rights to (stolen fonts, images, templates)

Getting paid

Fiverr releases earnings after the clearance period. Withdrawal options in Kenya have included Payoneer, PayPal and bank transfer; compare fees and exchange rates. See getting paid in Kenya, and keep a record of every withdrawal for tax.

Fiverr or Upwork?

FiverrUpwork
How you get workBuyers find your gigsYou send proposals (plus Project Catalog)
Best forClear, repeatable, smaller servicesBigger, custom and ongoing projects

Typical first winsSmall orders that build reviewsSmall contracts, then long-term clients

Many freelancers start on one and add the other later. Starting on both at once often means doing both badly.

Summary

  • Gigs are products: specific title, strong first image, clear good/better/best packages, honest description.
  • Research what buyers search and find a specific angle.
  • Respond fast, deliver early, handle revisions within scope; levels and ranking follow.
  • Never fake reviews or take payments off-platform.
