Designing for social media: sizes, layouts, carousels, stories, thumbnails, templates, consistency and results
Social media graphics are the most requested design work today: Instagram and Facebook posts, WhatsApp Status flyers, TikTok covers, YouTube thumbnails, LinkedIn carousels, event announcements, product promos and quotes. Businesses need fresh designs every week, which makes social media design an excellent source of recurring income. This unit covers platform sizes, layouts that stop the scroll, carousels, stories and thumbnails, building consistent template systems for clients, and measuring which designs perform.
Sizes and safe zones
| Format | Size | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram/Facebook portrait post | 1080×1350 px | Takes more screen space than square |
| Square post | 1080×1080 px | Works everywhere |
| Stories, Status, Reels/TikTok covers | 1080×1920 px | Keep text out of the top ~250 px and bottom ~340 px (profile, captions, buttons) |
| YouTube thumbnail | 1280×720 px | Bottom-right corner covered by video length |
| LinkedIn post | 1200×1200 or 1080×1350 px | Carousels uploaded as PDF |
| X (Twitter) image | 1600×900 px | 16:9 |
| Facebook event cover | 1920×1005 px (check current specs) |
Platforms change specs occasionally; check their current guidance and preview on a phone.
How people view social posts
- On phones, scrolling fast: you have about a second to catch attention.
- Small: text must be big and short.
- Next to other content: strong contrast and a clear focal point stand out.
- Often with sound off: videos need captions and on-screen text.

Text on images
- Less is more: one headline (5–8 words) and a few key details. Put the rest in the caption.
- Font sizes large enough to read on a phone; test by viewing at real size.
- Strong contrast: use solid shapes, gradients or dark overlays behind text on busy photos.
- One or two fonts; use weight and size for hierarchy.
- Check names, dates, prices and phone numbers carefully; mistakes are costly once posted and printed.

Carousels
Carousels (multiple slides) get strong engagement and saves, especially for educational content:
- Slide 1 (hook): a bold promise or question ("5 mistakes killing your small business website").
- Slides 2–8: one point per slide, consistent layout, numbered.
- Last slide: summary + CTA ("Save this post", "DM 'AUDIT' for a free website check").
Keep visual continuity (same background, fonts, positions) so swiping feels smooth. On LinkedIn, upload carousels as a PDF document.
Stories and Status
- Vertical, full-screen, short-lived: perfect for daily updates, polls, countdowns, behind the scenes, new stock.
- Keep key text in the safe zone (away from top and bottom edges).
- Use stickers (polls, links, questions) on Instagram; on WhatsApp Status, include the phone number or a clear "Reply to order".
- Series of 3–5 frames telling a mini story work well.
YouTube thumbnails
- 1280×720 px; readable at tiny sizes.
- A clear face with emotion or a striking object; high contrast; 2–5 large words (not the full title).
- Consistent style across a channel for recognition.
- Avoid misleading thumbnails (clickbait damages trust and may break platform rules).
Templates and a consistent feed
For each client, build a template system in Canva (or Figma):
- Brand Kit: logo, colours, fonts.
- 6–10 templates: promo, event, quote/tip, testimonial, product, announcement, carousel, story.
- Rules: logo placement, margins, photo style, text sizes.
Consistency makes a brand recognisable in the feed and makes your work faster: each new post takes minutes instead of hours.
Accessibility
- Add alt text to images on platforms that support it (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, X).
- Captions/subtitles on videos.
- Sufficient contrast, readable font sizes, not too much text.
- Don't rely on colour alone (e.g. "green = available" without words).
- Avoid flashing effects.
Working with clients
- Agree a content calendar monthly (topics, dates, formats) with the client or social media manager.
- Collect assets: photos, prices, offers, event details.
- Batch design the month's posts in one or two sessions using templates.
- Share for approval via Canva comment links or a shared folder; agree how many revision rounds are included.
- Export with clear names:
2026-10-03_grace-bakery_promo_IG.png. - Pricing: per design, per pack (e.g. 12 posts/month), or included in a social media management retainer (see the Make Money Online lesson).
Measure and improve
Look at insights (or ask the client) monthly:
- Which designs got the most reach, saves, shares, profile visits and messages?
- Do photos of real people outperform graphics? Do carousels get more saves?
- Which colours/layouts drew clicks to WhatsApp?
Keep what works, test new layouts, and refresh templates every few months to avoid fatigue.
Think about it: A hardware shop's posts are screenshots of price lists with tiny text, a different font and colour each time, and no contact details. Engagement is very low. Suggest a redesign plan.Show answer
Build a brand kit and 6–8 templates; feature one product (or a small group) per post with a large clear photo, big price and a short benefit; add the WhatsApp number/CTA and logo consistently; use carousels for price lists (one category per slide); create Status versions in 1080×1920 with safe zones; batch-produce weekly and track which posts bring messages.
Summary
- Know sizes and safe zones for posts, stories, thumbnails and covers; preview on a phone.
- Design for fast scrolling on small screens: one focal point, big short text, strong contrast.
- Use layout formulas for promos, events, tips and announcements; put details in captions.
- Carousels teach and get saves; stories/Status suit daily updates; thumbnails need faces, contrast and few words.
- Build template systems for consistency and speed, add alt text and captions, work with calendars and approvals, and improve using performance data.
