Blogging and ad income: setting up a blog, writing posts that rank, and monetising

A blog is a website where you publish helpful articles regularly. Blogs earn through display ads, affiliate links, sponsored posts and selling your own products and services. Blogging also builds credibility that wins freelance clients and jobs. It's slow (often 6–12 months before meaningful traffic), and AI-generated search answers are changing how people find content, so success comes from genuinely useful, experience-based writing. This unit covers the full process.

Is blogging worth it?

ProsCons
Low cost to startSlow growth (months to years)
Builds a long-term asset and authorityRequires consistent writing
Multiple income streamsGoogle algorithm and AI answer changes affect traffic
Supports your freelance/business brandAd income per visitor can be low for mostly local audiences

Blogging works best when combined with other income (services, products, YouTube) and when you have real knowledge or experience to share.

Niche and name

Choose a niche you can write 50+ articles about, where people search for answers and there's monetisation potential:

  • Personal finance in Kenya (SACCOs, MMFs, budgeting)
  • Agribusiness and farming guides
  • Tech how-tos and reviews
  • Education and career guidance (KUCCPS, courses, CVs)
  • Travel in Kenya and East Africa
  • Health and fitness (with accurate, sourced information)

Name: short, memorable, relevant; check domain availability (.co.ke, .com, .ke).

Platform choices

PlatformProsCons
Self-hosted WordPress (your domain + hosting)Full control, monetisation freedom, professionalCosts (domain/hosting), you manage updates/security
WordPress.comEasy, hostedFree plan limits; ads/plugins need paid plans
BloggerFree, simple, AdSense-friendlyLimited design and features
MediumBuilt-in audienceYou don't own the platform; limited monetisation from Kenya
SubstackNewsletters + blog, paid subscriptionsPlatform-dependent

For a serious blog, self-hosted WordPress is the common choice.

Setting up a WordPress blog (overview)

  1. Buy a domain from a registrar and hosting (cPanel shared hosting is fine to start).
  2. In cPanel, use Softaculous/WordPress installer to install WordPress on your domain.
  3. Turn on SSL (AutoSSL/Let's Encrypt) so the site uses HTTPS.
  4. Choose a lightweight theme (e.g. GeneratePress, Astra, Kadence, or a block theme).
  5. Install essential plugins: an SEO plugin (Yoast or Rank Math), caching/speed, security, backups, contact form, Site Kit by Google (connects Search Console and Analytics).
  6. Create pages: Home, About, Contact, Privacy Policy, Disclaimer.
  7. Set permalinks to post name (Settings → Permalinks).
  8. Connect Google Search Console and submit your sitemap.

(The Hosting subject explains domains, DNS and cPanel in detail.)

Keyword research

Write what people search for:

  1. Brainstorm questions your audience asks.
  2. Use Google autocomplete, "People also ask", related searches.
  3. Free tools: Google Trends, Ubersuggest/AnswerThePublic free tiers, Search Console (once you have traffic).
  4. Target specific long-tail keywords ("how to start a poultry business in Kenya with KSh 50,000") rather than broad ones ("poultry").
  5. Check search intent: do results show guides, lists, product pages? Match the format.

Writing posts that rank (and help)

  • Answer the question early, then go deeper.
  • Show experience: your own photos, examples, costs you actually paid, mistakes you made. Google's guidelines emphasise experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness (E-E-A-T).
  • Structure: clear H2/H3 headings, short paragraphs, bullets, tables, FAQs.
  • Accuracy: cite sources (official sites for fees, laws, health information); update posts when things change.
  • Length: as long as needed to fully answer, without padding.
  • AI tools: fine for outlines and editing, but unedited AI content without original value tends to perform poorly and can damage trust.

On-page SEO checklist

  • [ ] Keyword in the title, first paragraph, a heading and the URL slug
  • [ ] Compelling meta description (150–160 characters)
  • [ ] Descriptive headings (H2/H3)
  • [ ] Images compressed, with descriptive file names and alt text
  • [ ] Internal links to related posts; external links to reputable sources
  • [ ] Mobile-friendly, fast-loading pages
  • [ ] Schema (FAQ/How-to) via the SEO plugin where appropriate

Traffic beyond Google

  • Pinterest (for visual niches like food, decor, travel)
  • Facebook groups and pages, WhatsApp Channels, LinkedIn articles
  • Email newsletter (MailerLite, Brevo): your most reliable audience
  • YouTube videos linking to detailed blog guides
  • Collaborations and guest posts on related blogs

Monetisation

MethodHow
Google AdSenseApply once you have quality content (original, useful posts), clear navigation and required pages; ads earn per view/click; income depends on traffic, niche and audience location
Ad networksPremium networks need higher traffic thresholds
Affiliate marketingRecommend products with affiliate links (see the affiliate lesson); disclose clearly
Sponsored postsBrands pay for reviews/features; label as sponsored
Your products/servicesE-books, templates, courses, consulting, freelance services: often the best earners

Legal pages and ethics

  • Privacy policy (cookies, analytics, ads, email signups; Kenya's Data Protection Act applies to personal data).
  • Affiliate disclosure and disclaimer (especially finance/health).
  • Don't copy others' articles or images; respect copyright.
  • Don't write misleading reviews for commissions.
Think about it: A new blogger publishes 50 AI-generated articles in one week on random topics and applies for AdSense. Why might this fail, and what would work better?Show answer

Thin, unfocused, unoriginal content offers little value, so it may be rejected by AdSense and rank poorly. Better: choose a niche, publish fewer but genuinely helpful articles with original experience, accurate sources, good structure and internal links, and build traffic gradually.

Summary

  • Blogging is slow but builds a long-term asset; combine it with other income.
  • Choose a niche you can write 50+ helpful posts about; self-hosted WordPress gives the most control.
  • Set up WordPress with SSL, a light theme, SEO, speed, security and backup plugins, and Search Console.
  • Research long-tail keywords and search intent; write experience-rich, accurate, well-structured posts.
  • Follow an on-page SEO checklist; build traffic from Pinterest, social media, email and YouTube.
  • Monetise with AdSense, affiliates, sponsorships and especially your own products/services; publish legal pages and disclose.
