Start here: how microtask platforms work, getting paid in Kenya, and the rules that keep your account safe

Microtask platforms pay small amounts for short online jobs: tagging images, answering surveys, testing apps, rating search results, recording your voice, typing out audio. This subject reviews 55 real platforms in detail so you can choose wisely instead of signing up everywhere.

For the task types themselves (bounding boxes, search evaluation, RLHF and more), see Microtasking: every task type explained.

Honest expectations

  • Rewards sites and surveys usually pay a few hundred to a few thousand shillings a month for regular effort.
  • AI training, testing and transcription pay better, but you must pass tests and work is not always available.
  • Many platforms limit which countries can join or get tasks. Kenya is accepted on some and not others, and this changes.
  • Treat microtasks as side income and a stepping stone to skilled work (annotation, testing, writing, VA work).

Getting paid in Kenya

MethodHow it reaches youNotes
PayPalWithdraw to M-Pesa through the official M-Pesa–PayPal service, or to a bankThe most widely supported payout. Use your real name matching your ID
PayoneerWithdraw to a Kenyan bank accountCommon for AI training and freelance platforms
SkrillWithdraw to a card or bankOffered by some rewards sites
Airtime / M-Pesa directlyStraight to your phoneA few Africa-focused survey apps (for example GeoPoll) pay in airtime
CryptoSold through an exchangeVolatile; scams are common; Kenya now regulates virtual asset providers, so use licensed services and understand the risks
Gift cardsCodes for online storesOften not useful in Kenya: check before you choose

Set up your payout method before you start, and keep names identical on the platform, PayPal/Payoneer and your ID.

How to tell a legit platform

Green flags: free to join, clear terms and privacy policy, a support contact, a payment history people discuss on independent forums, and payouts after you reach a reasonable minimum.

Red flags: you must pay to join, "activate" or "upgrade"; earnings depend on recruiting others; daily returns on a deposit; payment only after you "complete a set" by topping up; recruitment only through Telegram or WhatsApp; promises like "KSh 3,000 a day liking videos".

The rules that keep your account (and your money) safe

  1. One account per person. Multiple accounts get everyone in your household banned.
  2. No VPN to fake your country. Platforms detect it, close accounts and keep balances.
  3. Never buy, rent or share accounts. "Remotasks/Outlier accounts for sale" are against the rules and often scams.
  4. Answer honestly and carefully. Attention checks catch rushed or random answers.
  5. Protect your details. Never share passwords, M-Pesa PINs or ID photos outside the official platform.
  6. Keep records of earnings for your own budgeting and tax (see Taxes and managing money).

Think about it: A Telegram group says you can earn KSh 2,500 a day on a "task app" if you first deposit KSh 1,000 to unlock premium tasks. What do you do?Show answer

Don't pay. Real microtask platforms never charge you to work; deposit-to-unlock "task apps" are a known scam pattern where early small payouts are used to get bigger deposits, then the app disappears.

Summary

  • Microtask platforms pay small amounts for short tasks; AI training, testing and transcription pay best.
  • In Kenya, PayPal (to M-Pesa), Payoneer and airtime are the most practical payouts.
  • Never pay to join, use one account, no VPNs, never buy accounts.
  • Confirm details on the official site: they change often.
