Networking careers and certifications: jobs, skills, certificates, home labs and a study plan

Every organisation that uses computers needs networks, and someone to design, install, secure and fix them. Kenya's growth in fibre, mobile data, data centres, fintech and cloud services keeps demand steady for people with networking skills, from technicians who install fibre and CCTV to engineers who run ISP backbones and cloud networks. This unit maps the career paths, the skills and certifications employers look for, how to get hands-on practice cheaply, and a realistic study plan.

Job roles

RoleWhat you doTypical entry path
IT support / helpdeskFix PCs, printers, Wi-Fi, user accounts; first-line network issuesFirst job for most; A+/IT basics
Network/field technicianCabling, crimping, patch panels, installing switches, APs, CCTV, fibre splicing, ISP home installationsHands-on training, MikroTik/Network+
Network administratorRun a company's network day to day: users, VLANs, Wi-Fi, firewall rules, monitoring1–3 years' experience + CCNA
Network engineerDesign and build networks, routing, WAN, VPNs, data centresCCNA → CCNP
NOC engineerMonitor ISP/bank networks 24/7, respond to outages, escalateCCNA; shift work common
Wireless engineerDesign Wi-Fi for campuses, hotels, warehousesWireless certs, survey tools
Security analyst / engineerFirewalls, VPNs, monitoring, incident responseNetwork+ / CCNA + Security+
Cloud network engineerVPCs, subnets, routing, VPNs and load balancers in AWS, Azure, Google CloudNetworking + cloud certs
Network automation engineerScripts and tools to manage networks at scaleNetworking + Python
Pre-sales / solutions engineerDesign solutions for customers of vendors and integratorsTechnical depth + communication

Who hires

In Kenya: ISPs and telcos (Safaricom, Airtel, Liquid, Jamii Telecom/Faiba, Zuku and many regional ISPs), banks and SACCOs, system integrators and IT companies, data centres, universities and schools, hospitals, county and national government, NGOs, hotels, manufacturers, and many SMEs that need someone who can "do networks". Abroad and remotely: managed service providers, cloud companies and NOCs serving many time zones (the remote jobs lesson in Make Money Online explains how to find these).

Freelance and small business opportunities: installing networks and CCTV for offices, schools and estates; Wi-Fi hotspot businesses; maintenance contracts.

Skills employers want

Technical:

  • IP addressing, subnetting (fast and accurate), VLSM
  • Switching, VLANs, STP; routing (static, OSPF), NAT
  • Wi-Fi planning and troubleshooting
  • Firewalls and VPNs; security basics
  • Linux and Windows basics; DNS and DHCP
  • Structured cabling and fibre basics; using testers
  • Monitoring tools; basic Python/automation
  • Vendor platforms common in Kenya: Cisco, MikroTik, Ubiquiti, Huawei, Fortinet

Soft skills: clear communication with non-technical users, documentation, calm troubleshooting under pressure, customer service, reliability, willingness to learn constantly.

Certifications (in a sensible order)

StageCertificateWhy
Start (optional)CompTIA A+ or equivalent IT basicsHardware, OS and support fundamentals
CoreCompTIA Network+ or Cisco CCNAThe core networking certificates; CCNA is the most recognised and covers everything in this subject and more
Local valueMikroTik MTCNAVery useful in Kenya where many ISPs and offices use MikroTik routers
WirelessUbiquiti or vendor wireless courses; CWNA for specialistsWi-Fi design
SecurityCompTIA Security+, Cisco CyberOps Associate, Fortinet NSE coursesSecurity roles
CloudAWS Cloud Practitioner → Solutions Architect Associate; Azure Fundamentals → Network EngineerCloud networking
AdvancedCisco CCNP, MikroTik MTCRE, vendor professional levelsSenior engineering
AutomationCisco DevNet Associate / CCNA automation topicsNetwork automation

Tips: certifications open doors, but employers also want hands-on proof. Check current exam prices and objectives on each vendor's website; prices are in US dollars and change. Cisco Networking Academy courses are offered through many Kenyan universities and colleges.

Build a home lab

OptionCostUse
Cisco Packet TracerFree (NetAcad account)Simulate routers, switches, PCs: perfect for CCNA labs
GNS3 / EVE-NGFree community versionsRun real router images (advanced, needs a good PC)
MikroTik CHR (Cloud Hosted Router)Free limited licencePractise RouterOS in a virtual machine
Second-hand gearLow costOld Cisco switches/routers, a MikroTik hAP, a managed switch
Raspberry Pi / old PCLow costLinux server: DNS (Pi-hole), DHCP, monitoring
Cloud free tiersFree/low costBuild VPCs and VPNs in AWS/Azure/Google Cloud (watch billing alerts)

A portfolio that proves your skills

  • Lab write-ups on GitHub or a blog: "VLANs and inter-VLAN routing for a school", with diagrams (draw.io), configs and screenshots.
  • A Packet Tracer file of a full small-business network.
  • A real project: networking a church, small office or relative's shop (with permission and photos of neat cabling).
  • Scripts from the Python networking lesson (IP plan generator, CSV validator).
  • A clean LinkedIn listing skills, certs and projects.

A 12-week study plan (1–2 hours a day)

WeeksFocusPractice
1–2Networking basics, OSI/TCP-IP, cables, binaryThis subject's first lessons; binary game
3–5IPv4, subnetting, VLSM, summarisation20 subnetting questions daily with the practice tool
6–7Switching, VLANs, STP, ARPPacket Tracer: build a 3-VLAN office
8–9Routing, NAT, DHCP, DNSPacket Tracer: two routers, OSPF, NAT to "internet"
10Wi-Fi and securityConfigure WPA2/WPA3, guest VLAN, ACLs
11IPv6, troubleshooting, Python basicsTroubleshooting scenarios; scripts
12Review and practice examsTimed practice tests, then book the exam

Getting your first job

  1. Get any IT foot in the door: helpdesk, attachment/internship, technician with an ISP or integrator.
  2. Volunteer: set up networks for schools, churches or community centres.
  3. Network with people: tech meetups, LinkedIn, Ajira Digital clubs, alumni groups.
  4. Tailor your CV to each job with specific skills ("Configured VLANs and inter-VLAN routing on Cisco switches") and link your portfolio.
  5. In interviews, expect subnetting on a whiteboard, OSI questions, and "how would you troubleshoot..." scenarios: practise talking through your method out loud.
  6. Keep learning: the field changes (Wi-Fi 7, IPv6, SD-WAN, cloud, automation).
Think about it: A Form 4 leaver with no experience wants to become a network engineer in two years. Suggest a practical path.Show answer

Start with this subject and Packet Tracer; get an entry job or attachment (helpdesk, ISP installation technician) while studying for CCNA (and MTCNA for local value). Build a home lab and a portfolio of documented labs and real small projects. After CCNA and 1–2 years of hands-on work, move into network administration/engineering roles, then specialise (security, cloud, wireless or automation).

Summary

  • Roles range from helpdesk and field technician to network, NOC, wireless, security, cloud and automation engineers.
  • Employers include ISPs, banks, integrators, data centres, education, health and government, plus remote and freelance work.
  • Core certs: Network+ or CCNA, plus MikroTik MTCNA in Kenya; then security, cloud or CCNP.
  • Practise with Packet Tracer, GNS3/EVE-NG, MikroTik CHR and cheap hardware; document labs in a portfolio.
  • Follow a structured plan, get any IT foot in the door, and keep learning.
