Forex and Deriv trading in Kenya: an honest guide before you risk money

Forex and Deriv are among the most searched "online money" topics in Kenya. Social media shows cars and profit screenshots; it rarely shows the much larger number of people who lost savings, school fees or loan money. Before you open an account, here is what you need to know.

Trading is not a job

Trading leveraged products (CFDs) is high-risk speculation. Brokers regulated in Europe must publish the share of retail client accounts that lose money; those published figures are commonly around 60% to 80% or more. Never trade with money you need.

How forex works in one minute

You speculate on exchange rates such as EUR/USD. Prices move in pips (0.0001 for most pairs). Leverage (e.g. 1:100) lets a small deposit control a large position, which multiplies losses as much as gains. A stop loss limits each loss; professionals commonly risk 1% or less of their account per trade.

What Deriv's synthetic indices really are

Deriv's synthetic indices (Volatility, Boom and Crash, Step Index) are simulated markets whose prices come from a random number generator, not from real economies or companies, and they run 24/7. Short-duration options behave much like bets. That is why losses can happen fast.

Check the regulator

In Kenya, the Capital Markets Authority (CMA) licenses online forex brokers. Check the CMA's list on cma.or.ke before opening any account, and be careful with brokers licensed only offshore.

Scams to avoid

• "Account managers" who trade for you with guaranteed returns (Ponzi schemes).
• Signal groups and "mentorships" sold with fake screenshots.
• Fake platforms that block withdrawals until you pay "tax".
• "Recovery agents" who promise to get your lost money back for a fee.

Safer ways to grow money

Build income from skills first, keep an emergency fund in a CMA-regulated money market fund, and consider Treasury bills and bonds through the CBK's DhowCSD, or long-term NSE shares.
