How to choose a web developer in Kenya (10 questions to ask)

Hiring the wrong developer is expensive: a site that never gets finished, a deposit that disappears, or a website you can’t update because only the developer has the password. Here’s how to choose well.

10 questions to ask

  1. Can I see websites you’ve built that are live today? Open them on your phone. Are they fast and easy to use?
  2. Can I talk to a past client? Good developers have happy clients who’ll vouch for them.
  3. What exactly is included in the price? Pages, design, content upload, domain, hosting, email, SSL, training?
  4. How long will it take, and what do you need from me?
  5. How do payments work? Payment in stages (a deposit, then milestones) protects both of you.
  6. Who owns the domain, hosting and code? The domain should be registered in your name, and you should get all logins.
  7. Will it work well on phones and show up on Google? Ask how they handle speed and SEO. You can test their past work with our free website checker.
  8. Can I update it myself? Will you get training or an admin area?
  9. What happens after launch? Is there support, backups and security updates?
  10. Can I get a written quote? A clear, written scope avoids arguments later.

Red flags

  • Asks for 100% payment upfront.
  • No portfolio, or only screenshots with no live sites.
  • Registers the domain in their own name.
  • Promises “number one on Google in a week”.
  • A price far below everyone else’s: find out what’s missing.
  • Stops answering once the deposit is paid.

What a fair agreement includes

  • The list of pages and features.
  • The timeline and milestones.
  • Payment stages and amounts.
  • How many rounds of changes are included.
  • Handover: logins, files and training.
  • Support after launch and its cost.
