What is programming? A beginner’s guide (and where to learn it free)

Programming (or coding) is writing instructions that a computer follows. Every app on your phone, every website, M-Pesa, and even the chip in a modern car runs on code that someone wrote.
A computer is very fast but not clever: it does exactly what it’s told. Programming is the skill of breaking a problem into small, clear steps and writing those steps in a language the computer understands.
A tiny example
This is a real Python program. It greets three people:
for name in ["Wanjiku", "Otieno", "Amina"]:
print("Habari, " + name + "!")
Run it and the computer prints three greetings. That’s programming: simple instructions that add up to useful things.
Popular languages and what they’re used for
- HTML and CSS: the structure and design of every web page. The best place for beginners to start.
- JavaScript: makes websites interactive: menus, forms, live updates.
- Python: easy to read; used for automation, data analysis, AI and back ends.
- SQL: talks to databases, where apps store customers, orders and records.
- PHP: powers WordPress and many business systems on cPanel hosting.
- Java and Kotlin: Android apps and big business systems.
- Dart and Flutter: Android and iPhone apps from one codebase.
- C and C++: operating systems, games, and electronics like Arduino.
Why learn to code?
- Jobs and freelancing: developers are needed by banks, startups, schools, hospitals and clients worldwide, and remote work pays in dollars.
- Build your own ideas: a website for your business, an app for your chama, a system for your school.
- Problem-solving: coding trains you to think clearly, a skill that helps in any career.
How to start
- Pick one path. For websites: HTML → CSS → JavaScript. For data and automation: Python.
- Practise a little every day. 30–60 minutes daily beats one long session a week.
- Build small projects: a personal page, a price calculator, a to-do list.
- Don’t fear errors. Every programmer sees errors all day; reading them is part of the skill.
- Share your work on GitHub and keep a portfolio.
